Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey presents an interactive, action-packed, family-oriented extravaganza

Shows with Broadway-quality production values. A new coaster. New menus at fan-favorite park eateries, courtesy of the amenable Chef Jeremy.
Are we back in the 1990s or early 2000s, when Six Flags Great Adventure was consistently packed and there was entertainment and excitement around every corner?
Sure, there’s a gaping hole in the skyline where Kingda Ka and Zumanjaro used to tower over the park, visible from the highway. Nitro, Jersey Devil, El Toro and the new Flash hold the line as the centerpieces of a semi-solid coaster line-up that only promises to get better over the next few years.
In my opinion, the entire 2025 season at Six Flags Great Adventure felt a bit like a dress rehearsal for what’s to come. And the DC Heroes and Villains Fest gives fans plenty of hope for the future.
What is DC Heroes and Villains Fest?
DC Heroes and Villains Fest is an interactive Six Flags adventure starring Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Robin against the Joker, Harley Quinn and Catwoman.
Initially rolled out at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California earlier this year, the show came to Six Flags’ East Coast flagship park, Great Adventure, in August 2025. You can still catch the action from 5 PM until the park closes Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Labor Day weekend (including Monday, September 1, 2025).
The DC Heroes and Villains Fest shows, activities, and character meet-and-greets are included with park admission, including guests with day passes to Great Adventure, season passes, memberships, or an All-Parks passport.
The Cavalcade
The event started with the DC Heroes Bash Cavalcade, a parade that ended in Metropolis, steps away from the Showcase Theater and the Justice League ride.
The parade marched through Movie Town, past the giant wheel, around the fountain and across a good portion of the park. Even if you didn’t want to join in the festivities, there’s a chance you’d catch a glimpse of the parade if you were walking around between 4 PM and 4:30. The Cavalcade stopped to perform at various points on the path.
It’s been a while since Six Flags had a parade. In fact, I don’t remember ever seeing one. I’d love to see Looney Tunes or DC characters marching daily, along with more DC Universe character appearances.
The Show
Crowds had started to gather on the steps of the Justice League: Battle for Metropolis ride and under the shade of the Coca-Cola umbrellas near the Metro Grill to dodge the heat shortly before the event. We saw mostly families with young children, and a smattering of kids in super-hero costumes or adults wearing super-hero tees. The event was crowded, but not uncomfortably so.
The DC Heroes Opening Ceremony, which kicked off the storyline for the interactive event, began on the main stage after a brass band performance on the ground.
The Storyline
The basic plot: The Joker corrupted the Mayor of Gotham City, DC Supervillains took over the dedication ceremony of a giant Batman statue, and the Heroes had to step in and save the day. Meanwhile, the villains were determined to bring the citizens of Gotham City to their side.
The actors were the perfect mix of talent and campiness. Highlights included the Joker Dance Party and character meet-and-greets, which drew fairly long lines. There were also interactive games for kids, largely geared toward a younger audience.

You could also find tons of Instagrammable photo ops in Metropolis.
Tip for moms of younger kids and tweens: Capture those moments now while your kids are still happy to do it without eye rolls. I promise, you will look back at them and laugh.
The Food and Beverages
I’m a foodie and was looking forward to tasting the new, superhero-themed offerings, especially the Mystery Eggroll, Historic Hawaiian Pizza, and the Garden Lair Salad. I love a good salad, even at theme parks, and the Garden Lair Salad was an interesting mix of field greens and edible flowers and fresh parmesan and/or Asiago cheese.
The mystery egg rolls were okay. I was expecting something a bit better. The flavor combos were interesting, but I didn’t like not knowing what I was getting before I ordered. My daughter’s friend said pepperoni and cheese isn’t a bad combo, “but not in an egg roll.” With Chop Six closed, I’d rather see one of the restaurants offering pork, shrimp or beef egg rolls as a regular menu item.
The Hawaiian Pizza stood out to me as another interesting choice. I never think highly of theme park pizza, especially being a native New Yorker with access to some of the best pizza in the world. But it wasn’t bad. When we were hungry mid-day, we stopped at YumYum Café and the pizza really hit the spot. It was fresh and hot. (Check out that cheese pull!)

My favorite of all the food choices might be a surprise, as I’m not usually one for sweets. But the Vigilante Funnel Cake was amazing and enough to satisfy a family of six. It was topped with Oreo cookie pieces, a layer of chocolate syrup, and yellow sprinkles (symbolizing Batman’s colors, I guess).

Tips to Make the Most of Your Great Adventure Weekend
Once you’ve got your passes and your ready to enjoy the day, here are some tips to make the most of the event, or any day in the park.
Get to the Park at Rope Drop
If you’re interested in thrill rides, get to the park as early as possible. This is true for virtually every theme park.
But Great Adventure fans in recent years have gotten spoiled by unusually short lines. As traffic picks up due to promotions and events like DC Heroes and Villains, lines are growing. It also doesn’t help that they cut their coaster line up, which means the same number of people trying to get on fewer coasters.
Having said that, we went to the park on Thursday, August 7, and rode everything we wanted to multiple times without lines. We even got to see a preview of the DC Heroes and Villains show. But, whether it was the special event or the weekend timing, lines were over one hour for The Flash and other favorites last Friday.
Even though the Heroes and Villains festivities don’t start until later in the day, you can ride more coasters between the time the park opens and noon or 1 PM than you’ll be able to do mid-day. Late evening before the park closes is also a good time to catch a few rides with short lines.
Choose Your Eats Carefully
Speaking of lines, if you have your heart set on specialty food from the Fest, make a beeline for that booth. The Hawaiian Pizza was available early in the day at YumYum Café, but other specialty foods, including the egg rolls, weren’t available until the event started.
The KaPow! Parfait we got from YumYum Café was not as described in the guide: It was not red velvet cake and chocolate pudding, but blue gelatin, whipped cream and sprinkles. (See above photo.) My son and his friend didn’t complain, as it was a fun, sweet treat.
Certain locations were out of raspberries for the Lightning Lemonade, and, by 6:30 PM, none of the bars had Passionfruit vodka for the Speedster Splash. Although the online guide said this adult beverage is available at all bars, it’s only at select locations.
Trying all the options on the specialty menu would leave you too full to enjoy rides (or possibly even walk!) Choose a few favorites or plan to split portions. For instance, two people could share a slice of pizza with a side of fries, a Garden Lair salad, and a parfait. For a savory snack later in the day, share two egg rolls.
The whole family can share a funnel cake to end the evening — you’ll still be snacking all the way to the New Jersey Turnpike!
Be Prepared for Meet and Greets
Meet-and-greet lines got long, so it’s best to line up early if you have anxious kiddies excited to shake hands with Superman or giggle at the Joker. The characters were extremely friendly and took time to make each person feel special. It’s worth the wait to have that type of experience rather than to feel rushed through. However, remember to be considerate of others in line and have your phone ready for a photo op.
The last time we went to a Meet and Greet at Great Adventure was 2019 when we saw Shazam and other characters. I remember it was the same way – a truly memorable experience. I give the character actors, both then and now, a lot of credit for their patience in the heat. They all played their roles well.
Set Your Priorities
I offer this tip a lot when I’m writing about theme parks. Travel agent experts back me up: Decide what’s important to you and your family and spend your time and your money in those places.
For instance, my son and his friend were all about tasting the specialty items and riding their favorite roller coasters when we attended on DC Heroes and Villains Media Day.

My daughter and her friend loved dancing – even got on stage once – and enjoyed the performances. They also made sure to hit up Nitro, Batman: The Ride, and Medusa.
We caught the Dancing Through the Decades show, featuring hit music from the ‘80s through today. These performers may have been upstaged by the action in Metropolis, on a temporary stage between Mama Flora’s and Déjà vu, but they are worth setting an alarm on your watch to catch the show!

Set Alarms
If there are events I want to see at a theme park, I’ll set an alarm 15 minutes before. Wherever I am in the park, I’ll have time to wrap up what I’m doing and get to the show. I never feel obligated to follow the clock but it keeps me from missing must-see events or checking my phone compulsively to make sure I don’t miss a show.
Use the App
I know, I know. Who needs another app on their phone? But the Six Flags app offers insights into ride wait times, show times, and a handy interactive map that can guide you through the park.
You can also store your passes in the app, which is perfect for gift shop discounts and park entry, especially if you don’t use a digital wallet to store your season pass or membership.
Best of all, the Six Flags app lets you toggle between all the legacy parks. So if you decide to hit up Six Flags New England for a weekend or jump down to Six Flags Georgia, you don’t have to download another app. Just click your preferred park from the dropdown menu.
I can’t wait until all the legacy Cedar Fair parks get on the same system, because in the past two years I’ve had to download separate apps for Kings Dominion, Kings Island, Dorney Park, Cedar Point, and Schlitterbahn. (I know, cry me a river! I’m so fortunate to have traveled to all these parks in recent years!)
Is DC Heroes and Villains Worth It?
Are you planning New Jersey family fun in the last weeks of summer? You should attend Great Adventure DC Heroes and Villains Fest if you:
· Are big DC “geeks”
· Have kids who love superheroes
· Are excited to see shows at Great Adventure again
· Want to enjoy one of the best theme parks in the Northeast
With season passes on sale right now, giving you access for the rest of this season plus all of next year, it’s well worth the price.
Plus, the big question remains: Is this just a hint of things to come? Can we expect more Broadway-quality productions? Will the Showcase Theater become a destination point in the park? Will the next new coaster replace the hole in our hearts left by Ka?
Tune in next season, same bat-time, same bat-channel! (GenXers remember!)
